I just got home from seeing Leave The World Behind–Swedish Hosue Mafia's newest documentery. And wow. Just wow. I’ll be honest I had my doubts, I’ve always had this little thought in the back of my head that everything SHM does is for publicity and money. That includes the “One Last Tour” and everything that has come with it. Sure it has created the most enormous buzz around the three artists, and has caused them mountains of fame, but the one message this documentary had that touched me, was the relationship between people who love dance music.
They opened the movie with each of them explain how they met. Ingrosso and Angello both spoke of meeting each other for the first time. Angello was a Hip-hop DJ and Ingrosso had the uppity energy of a squirrel on Adderall with a passion for house music like no other. They talked about the first time they listened to a Daft Punk record together, and it was like the beat was connecting their souls, this is a concept I find hard to explain, you have to feel it.
Whether you're standing in front of a massive main stage being blown away by the most intense speakers imaginable, or you’re in your basement playing a song off your laptop; the beat, the melody, the breakdown, the emotion all wrapped into one becomes this thing that you unintentionally share with the person next to you. And if no one’s around, it makes you want to find someone to share it with, and that is why people who rave, are a family.
The one line that made so much sense to me was how they explained meeting someone else with a love for dance music. When you meet someone who also has a passion for dance music the way you do, it’s like two dogs sniffing each other’s ass’s for the first time. You sniff, you evaluate and you instantly connect. Meeting someone else with this passion creates an unbreakable bond no matter how much time is spent with that person. And this is one characteristic of dance music I don’t see in any other genre.
I have personally attended numerous festivals, shows, concerts etc. And every time I do I meet another human who feels the way I do about dance music and we connect. And now I have people I call friends all around the world who have been brought to me by dance music, Chelsea included. If neither of us were passionate about this music, there’s no chance in hell we would have met, and now look at us. Creating this whole world for ourselves that completely engulfs our souls in electronic music because THAT is what life is about. Creating your own destiny full of your own passion, and your own intentions.
SHM showed the world how to connect through music and for that I can forever thank them. Because I know no matter where I go, I’ll always find someone on my music level, someone who is just as obsessed, just as crazy and just as in love with this culture as I am.
So from Miami to Ibiza, thank you SHM for showing us how to leave the world behind us, and listen to the beating of our hearts.
